My links this weekend are all political, which is unusual for me. But I feel so strongly about protecting the coast of my beautiful province, and I think every Canadian needs to know what is going on right now.
Chairman Harper and the Chinese Sell-Out – The Tyee
Appallingly, the treaty would give Sinopec, one of the big Chinese backers of the Northern Gateway pipeline, the right to sue the government of British Columbia if it blocks the project. Sinopec could also demand that only Chinese labour and materials be used on the pipeline. Moreover the treaty gives Chinese state owned companies “the right to full protection and security from public opposition.”
This is so blatantly undemocratic I can’t understand why the entire country isn’t screaming about it right now. The only reason I can think of is that they don’t know about it (or don’t care, which is unfortunately just as likely).
Petition: Stand Up Against The Sellout to China – The Green Party
Your petitioners call on the Government of Canada to,
Decline to ratify the Canada-China Investment Treaty, take immediate steps to limit the influence of state-owned enterprises over our democracy, in the interest of ensuring that the power over Canadian laws remains in Canadian hands.
Canadians can sign a petition to The House of Commons calling for this treaty to be abandoned, organized by the Green Party of Canada.
And while we’re on the topic of power, addiction and the shameful behaviour of our national leaders, here’s an excellent TED talk by Gabor Maté. The Power of Addiction and The Addiction of Power really hits home for me right now, as I watch people in my life struggle with addictions, and as our government blindly seeks power at the expense of the environment. Watch it, then go give your kids a big warm hug.
